Tipper Hire Glossary
Understand the common terms used when hiring a tipper truck.
- Dry Hire
- Hire of the tipper without a driver. The customer is responsible for operating the vehicle and must hold the appropriate licence.
- Wet Hire
- Hire of the tipper with a qualified driver included.
- GVM – Gross Vehicle Mass
- The maximum permitted weight of the vehicle when fully loaded, including the truck, driver, passengers, fuel and load.
- Tare Weight
- The weight of the tipper when empty, including standard equipment and fluids.
- Payload Capacity
- The maximum weight the tipper can legally carry. Payload is calculated by subtracting the tare weight from the GVM.
- Tipper Tray Dimensions
- The internal length, width and height of the tipper body. These measurements help determine whether the truck is suitable for the required load.
- Load Volume
- The amount of space available in the tipper body, generally measured in cubic metres (m³).
- Hydraulic Tipping System
- The mechanism that raises the tipper body so materials can be discharged safely.
- Load Restraint
- The equipment and procedures used to prevent materials from moving, spilling or falling from the vehicle during transport.
- Site Access
- The available space and ground conditions required for the tipper to safely enter, manoeuvre, unload and exit a worksite.
- Overhead Clearance
- The clear space above the tipper, including powerlines, trees, roofs and structures. The tipper body must never be raised without sufficient clearance.
- Hire Period
- The agreed period between collecting or receiving the vehicle and returning it.
- Insurance Excess
- The amount the hirer may be required to pay if the vehicle is damaged, stolen or involved in an incident during the hire period.
- Cleaning Fee
- An additional charge that may apply if the tipper is returned excessively dirty or with material remaining inside the tray.
